Fifa to expand World Cup to 48 teams
The World Cup will be expanded to host 48 teams, up from 32, Fifa has decided.

An initial stage of 16 groups of three teams will precede a knockout stage for the remaining 32 when the change is made for the 2026 tournament.

The sport's world governing body voted unanimously in favour of the change at a meeting in Zurich on Tuesday.

The number of tournament matches will rise to 80, from 64, but the eventual winners will still play only seven games.

The tournament will be completed within 32 days - a measure to appease powerful European clubs, who objected to reform because of a crowded international schedule.

a massive backwards step at a time when clubs are insisting on playing more and more meaningless friendlies in summer , so much for any sort of winter break that they all seem to want .

I quite like the idea to be honest. Hopefully it'll help more small nations get into the tournament. (Although i am sure in practice it won't happen, and will probably just serve to stop top revenue earning teams drawing each other in groups and getting knocked out...)

It'll still be the same duration in days and the finalists will still play seven games.

There will be more matches and more knockout matches. Also no 'dead rubbers' in the group stages so no resting of players etc.

According to Sky "Spanish league want to take FIFA to court to stop World Cup expanding to 48 teams. La Liga say they weren't consulted on unacceptable plan"
The quicker Europe breaks away from FIFA and tries to form an alternative the better.

What the fuck do the Spanish league care? I can't really see how it affects domestic competition.

Re: Fifa to expand World Cup to 48 teams
Fucking ridiculous idea that they haven't thought through.

The qualifiers will surely have to change, which could have a huge impact on national associations cashflow. I bet they ain't thought of that. At the moment the South American qualifiers would take 15 months to eliminate TWO teams.

Politics and money wins the day. These tournaments should be getting smaller, not fucking bigger.

Like I said on the other thread not having noticed this one - if you want to leave a corrupt out-of-order international organisation, look no further than FIFA.

Re: Fifa to expand World Cup to 48 teams
To be honest, the way they've cut it makes it vaguely palatable for me. Still 7 games to win it, still in the same time frame, and a clean qualification format where the top 2 in each of the 16 groups makes it through to the knockout round of 32.

Much better than the farcical scenario of 'best 3rd place ' teams going through to make up numbers. Most if not every game will have something on it
